AboutThis used to be a succinct and somewhat terse (if not a little bit funny) blurb about who I am. No more. Gone are the days of brevity and simplicity. Farewell to sanity and cleanliness. In all seriousness, I thought it might be useful to have a little bit of work experience listed here. Also, it will be a place for me to keep track of what I’ve done for my own personal recollection. Free StuffThere are many excellent distrubutions of linux out there, and these are the best (going from hardest to install, to the easiest): Gentoo – not for the faint of heart, but no excess bloating of the OS Fedora Core – Not quite as pretty of an installer as SuSE, but still quite easy to install, with all the latest software packages. SuSE – Very easy and pretty graphical installer. Ubuntu – Very simple, lightweight install, with all the coolness of Debian. Not quite ready to take the plunge into the world of linux? There are several alternatives, actually. You can try out a linux live CD. The Ubuntu install CD is an excellent one. If you really insist on running windows, or just want stuff that works without a lot of hassle (or money), give some of these a whirl: Audacity – a stellar audio editing program with all the bells and whistles. The Gimp – a top notch graphic editor for all your photo-editing needs. Pidgin – for all you msn junkies, here’s a program that does it all: msn, yahoo, icq, aim, and more! NASBSome time ago I went on a quest to find an RSS feed for the NASB translation of the Bible that went straight through in a year, and contained the text within the actual RSS (no external links necessary). I was unable to find anything, so I began work on a script that would create such a feed every day. The Lockman Foundation has graciously given me permission to publish this project for all to use. So, without further adieu, here is the RSS link for your free use. You can use any modern browser to read the RSS feed, or you can use a separate feed reader to read through the Bible. I personally prefer Google Reader, as it is online, and never misses a feed update. I should note (as mentioned in the comments), that clicking the orange icon up above in your browser will not take you to the correct feed, it will take you to the main feed for this website. NTPI run an NTP server. This page is dedicated to that. If you want more info on NTP, you should go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_Time_Protocol. If you’re wondering whether ntpdate is good enough to keep your clock synchronized, don’t. Just go install ntp (or ntpd) and let it run. ntp.shanebishop.net (Stratum 3 NTP) System: VIA C3 800MHz, 256 MB RAM, Debian Linux 5.0 Synchronization: ntpd 4.2 Please do not use this ntp server directly. When I say ‘stick’, I mean an actual piece of wood, not a memory stick. It was originally an old Gateway computer that I acquired as a castaway in 2001. It still ran fine, but was horribly slow (and bulky). It had an Intel Pentium 200 MHz processor, and I upgraded it to 184 MB of RAM.
